    The hard drive space consumption should be telling enough. Perhaps SD3 has more kits, but usually the more space it requires means more multi samples and velocities, which equals more realism.

    I have SD3 and AD2 - I also have a Roland TD27 with digital hi hats, snare and ride. The mapping on SD3 seems to support position sensing on the snare and ride, also the various zones on the hts including the bell. However even with the TD50 map, AD2 is not fully compatible - I had to reverse all the cymbal aftertouch "choke" or the cymbals simply did not work - same with the hi hat. Also trying to create a custom map in AD2 was near impossible especially for the hi hat.

  • @reggietelly

    This was really helpful and even on a phone speaker the Superior was well Superior. However it really has a studio sound and I think Roland’s stock sounds can be tuned to be great. I have EZ Drummer and both the ride and snare play beautifully. However the digital hihat triggering the VST just has no sensitivity and try as I might I can’t get a sound I like out of it.

    • @Beatnikk777
      @Beatnikk777 9 месяцев назад

      Yeah, Id be under the impression that the EZ Drummer packs don't have the hihat articulations of SD3? Most of them have about 7 or 8 subtle hariations which the digital hats track pretty well. However I still find the need to go in a fine tune things to get it perfect if Im doing very detailed hi hat stuff.

      I believe that the TD 27 preset in EZ Drummer is not updated for Version 2.0 of the module. Someone suggested trying the 50X and I will do that to see if it makes a difference.@@Beatnikk777

    I have AD2 and have been pretty unhappy with how roland digital HH transfers over. I feel like it loses some touch. Curious what you landed on? SD sound waaaay better to me in your demo... but now that you've messed with it, what do you recommend?

    • @Beatnikk777
      @Beatnikk777 Год назад

      Hey Kevin, SD3 has since released a TD50x preset which has greatly improved the hi hat response. The hi hat articulations that you can get in SD3 are vastly superior. Depending on which patch or bundle you're using, you can sometimes get over 10 hi hat articulations. They track pretty well on the digital hats and Id guess that if you spent a decent amount of time configuring the settings on both the TD50x and SD3 you could get them talking to each other seamlessly. I haven't bothered to do this and for anything except very detailed, fast, complex hi hat patterns the auto capture works without a glitch. However, I have on occasion needed to go in and remap the hats in some sections to get them to sound perfect. This isn't a hard process, but its much more time consuming in comparison to it just perfectly capturing everything. If you use software drums regularly for music production then my advice would be getting onboard with SD3 if you can afford the price tag and hard drive space.

    • @kevineisentraut3228
      @kevineisentraut3228 Год назад

      @@Beatnikk777 , thanks for this! I'm using the TD-27 currently with the new digital HH. I think they sound great in the module and articulate perfectly. However, that doesn't translate too well to AD2. I found the setup in AD2 to adjust the HH and will mess with that over the weekend. I used VSTs for all my drum sounds and it sounds like SD3 might be a better option for me.

    So difficult to make these comparisons because both AD2 and SD3 can be made to sound just about any way you want them. If you liked the ride from the TD50x, you could choose a ride in AD2 or SD3 and tweak it to sound virtually identical. Also the SD3 kit you chose would match better with the AD2 kit called Black Velvet. It would be easy to pick certain kits in AD2, SD3, and TD50x to make whichever one you wanted to sound best. And picking "ultimate" kits in all 3 would still be a personal preference as all of them can sound fantastic. I will say that either SD3 or AD2 have many more options and better sounds than the TD50x. But for playing live, I like having it all in the box and the TD50x is great. For studio, play the TD50x, record both audio and midi. Then you can use either AD2 or SD3 or TD50x and/or layer whichever ones you want during post production.

    Very helpful. Am looking at a 50KV2. Surprised how well the TD50x competed. For pure expressiveness it wins here. Maybe no surprise since the module is tuned pretty well for the new digital pads. Thought SD was certainly more lively sounding. These two are a pretty good combo, and maybe the best thing available having both. (Sounds like you are pretty invested in AD. For me it is way outclassed by both of the other options here.)

      Hey Burt, yeah before getting this kit I was using AD2 as my acoustic drum software. However now after getting SD3 I use that all the time. The only thing I prefer AD2 for is aux percussion add ons, because I find the interface quicker to set up and because I have a lot of add packs I've got more sounds. But the Fields Of Rock SDX has some great percussive stuff which Ive recently purchased. I find the SD3 interface is slower to use but its way better for complete control of every element of your sound. Also since making this video Toontrack has made a TD50x preset which tracks the hats better, however I found that I still needed to go in and move them around for very detailed sections. I assume theres a way to configure the TD50x module and the SD3 software to work flawlessly, but I havent taken the time to do that yet.

    I just wish I could use Superior Drummer 3 because I'm blind and stuck on Superior Drummer 2 sense my accessibility software can't interface with version 3 and I'm being left behind. I'll probably never use the Decades SDX or the new Area 33 that just came out and that sucks because Al Shmit is one of my idles and sense I'll probably never be able to work with him the next best thing would be being able to pretend I'm him when tracking drums lol... But I can't do that because TuneTrack doesn't care about blind musicians or engineers. We're not even worthy of being an afterthought and it's sad. We had to make scripts for our screen reading software to tell it what the UI is for addictive drums, EZ Drummer 2, Superior Drummer 2, and Stephen Slate drums 5 as well as several other non-drum plugins like Melodine 4. None of these companies made their software accessible on their own. We had to hack it in and our cobbled together solutions aren't always reliable and we usually end up being left behind.

    In my opinion Addictive Drums has always sounded more natural to my ear and less generic than TuneTrack accept the toms. XLN really needs to work on that for Addictive Drums 3, I'd say the toms are their weakest link.

      @Beatnikk777 Год назад

      Hey Michael, Im no expert but I'll answer your questions to the best of my knowledge and perhaps someone else will also chime in. In my experience the sidestick does work with SD3 so I'd assume itd work with AD2. Since the making of this video SD3 has updated and now maps better with the TD50x module. The hats work way better than they used to. Its pretty amazing. I have never used the digital ride or hats in conjunction with another analogue ride or hats. I have not been able to get this to work on the TD50x and Id assume it also wouldn't work with SD3 or AD2 because they dont have options for these things within their kit layouts. Although you may be able to add another hi hat as an external instrument in SD3, but in that instance it wouldn't have the foot pedal control. As I said, Im not an expert and Im just making assumptions based on my understanding of the various interfaces.

      It's a common question. I will put up a vid about it soon. Essentially, you plug your module into your PC via USB cable. AD2 and SD2 are great with edrums and offer presets that make it quick. Make you sure download the latest drivers for your module from Roland/whatever other manufacturer. Latency (delay between hitting the pad and hearing the sound) is always a concern but is lowered by hooking your module to an audio interface instead of directly into your PC. If you use a Mac, the interface may not be necessary, as Macs have natively low latency. Also, some PC users will hook up the module directly to their PC, skipping an audio interface, and then select the module itself as the output audio interface. Latency is fairly low with that method as well.

    In my ears SD3 sounded like the weakest here, kind of flat, but that may be just a matter of finetuning. As a TD-17 owner, I really like the overall sound of the 50x! It takes some time to tweak the rolandish... idk.. resonant sterile character out of the TD-17 module, but then it is a really goot kit. I think I'll testdrive the 50x as soon as I get my hands on it. Sounds a good amount "fresher" than the old library.

      I upgraded my TD-50 to the TD-50X. I haven't messed around too much with the update but the OP was very good once you fine tuned it. The presets were very bad. I liked the TD-17 presets better.
